Hyaluronic Acid Injection Therapy
Hyaluronic Acid Injection Therapy – Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of synovial fluid. Hyaluronan injections help to lubricate joints, which provides temporary pain relief. For this reason at Resolve Physiotherapy hyaluronic acid injections are used as part of a wider treatment package to ensure that the underlying problem is rehabilitated as effectively as possible.
What are hyaluronic acid injections used for?
Hyaluronan injections are most useful in degenerative joint conditions when the smooth surfaces of the joint have worn but there’s no significant inflammation present. Joints commonly injected include the knee, shoulder, elbow, thumb or ankle. You’re less likely to be prescribed hyaluronan injections if there’s already inflammation in the joint although it has been suggested that the injections may have anti-inflammatory effects and could change the disease process.
When and how do I have hyaluronic acid injections?
How often you have the injections depends on the type of hyaluronan preparation used. At Resolve Physiotherapy we try to always use the best quality synthetic hyaluronic acids on the market. The number of injections needed will depend on the individual as will the timing between injections.
The injections should work within days if they’re effective and the benefits can last for several months as the particles in hyaluronan are quite large, so they can stay in the joint for some time before they’re absorbed into the blood stream. Again, this depends on the individual and the type of hyaluron used. Sometimes repeat courses are needed and this would be decided during ongoing consultations with your physiotherapist.
Hyaluronan injections have very few side-effects compared to steroids. There’s always a small risk of infection with any invasive procedure. If the injection is done in slightly the wrong place, it won’t damage your skin or muscle.
At Resolve Physiotherapy we will choose the most appropriate product to be injected and dose for your condition and symptoms. Most injections are quick and easy to perform. We only employ the best local consultants to deliver the joint injections as this is key to their success. Your condition will be thoroughly assessed prior to injection and full details of the product, potential side effects and aftercare explained.
